“Monumental”

Colossians 1:18, “He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.” NASB 1995

Glinting off of the dizzying peaks, the sun illuminated the towering monuments to the ingenuity and craft of their creators. Surely as nations rose and fell, these monoliths would remind future peoples of their forerunners, and they would despair that such skill and creativity were lost to time. Suddenly, a withering hail-fire battered these bastions of the arts. First to fall was the Icon of Integrity, followed by the Sophia Skyscraper, finally the Persevering Pillar tumbled to the ground. Courageous Colossus remained standing but no longer retaining its former splendor.

After 20 minutes, it was over. Nothing remained but a waterlogged flotsam of cardboard and rubber debris from the pressure activated water dispersal shells. The tribes had spent a full 5 minutes strategizing, debating, designing, and constructing. Now the results of their furious, intellectual labor had been leveled in their jealous striving to ensure that their tower was peerless among cardboard cairns.

Like many monuments in the world, these cardboard towers were ill fated. At the end of time, the only monument that will stand is the church of Jesus Christ. We often forget that though Christ is seated at the right hand of God, He is still active in the world today, building the church into a living organism to bring Him glory. He works to bring about the fullness of the church of which He is the head, and to bring about fruit in the life of believers. On our own, we cannot live the Christian life. Rather, it is Christ that lives the Christian life through us as we are filled with the Holy Spirit. We cannot share with others until we first receive what the Lord has given us.

Anything we do outside of Christ will come to nothing. Instead, we should be serving the church. By participating in the church, we are participating in work that truly matters, what Christ is doing. It is only the Creator and Maintainer of the Universe from before all things, the Firstborn of Creation and the Image of the Invisible God who can build something truly monumental.

Praises

  • Improvement to a number of situations affecting the family and friends of camp members.
  • Many campers are demonstrating great interest in the lessons and are having serious conversations with one another about what is being taught.
  • The safe arrival of our guests, and good fellowship.

Petitions

  • That the campers would be open and engaged in conversation about the lessons and devotions in specific, and the Bible in general throughout the week.
  • Wisdom and guidance for the members of camp leadership that have difficult decisions to make throughout the week.
  • The character of the campers is being revealed as they become more comfortable with us. We pray this will be an opportunity for challenge and growth, rather than a source of strife and trouble.
